After

Some Californians were still asleep when the concrete structures tumbled to the ground.  Thousands of memories and hopes melted with the steel while somewhere in the world: newborns were being welcomed, my sister celebrated another birthday.  It had been a landmark in time.  Some say it marked the beginning of the end.  The breaking of the chain that held Pandora’s Box closed.

But here I am writing this and here you are now reading this.  We cannot deny that we had laughed since then or that we watched TV for things other than the news.  We shopped, we bathe, we were antsy for weekends.  It is not a fault that we do these nor do I think we are more callous than before.  It is just that we go on, we move on.  We feed our children, hug them, and sing them songs.  We tuck them in their beds.  We kiss them goodnight.
